About

Marlene R. Miller, MD, MSc, is Pediatrician-in-Chief at University Hospitals and Chair of The Department of Pediatrics at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. She also holds the title of Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She is board certified in Pediatrics.

In her role as Pediatrician-in-Chief and Chair, Dr. Miller leads the development and implementation of strategic, business and marketing plans for the pediatric health system across University Hospitals. She oversees over 150 pediatric faculty across our tripartite mission of: To Heal. To Teach. To Discover.

Dr. Miller is an internationally renowned clinician and scientific leader in pediatric health care quality and value. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications on pediatric quality and patient safety, has been continuously grant funded and received grants from the National Institutes of Health, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Institute of Medicine, and the Children’s Hospital Association. Dr. Miller is a frequent presenter at national meetings and has led and participated in numerous national committees focused on pediatric health care.

Dr. Miller came to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s in July 2018 from the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, where she served as Chief Quality Officer for Pediatrics across the Johns Hopkins Medicine health system and Vice Chair of Quality and Safety at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

Dr. Miller earned her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency and pediatric cardiology fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Dr. Miller completed her thesis research and Master of Science in Clinical Investigation at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Miller also previously worked and led the Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in the Department of Health and Human Services for the federal government.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
