About
Dr. Armitage is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Case Western Reserve University and is the Vice Chair for Education and Residency Director in the Department of Internal Medicine. His primary professional focus has been on postgraduate medical education and clinical infectious diseases. Dr. Armitage has served as the President of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) and chair of the Organization of Program Directors Associations. He has been active in the Ohio Chapter of the American College of Physicians for several years and is a Master of the ACP. He is currently on the board of the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).
In 2002 he received the Parker J. Palmer Award from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medicine Education and in 2019 the Dema Daley Founders Award from APDIM. His research interests include the process of care in community-acquired pneumonia and outcomes in graduate medical education.
Dr. Armitage received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas and attended medical school at the University of Colorado. He completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases fellowship at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals in Cleveland. Dr. Armitage served as Chief Resident in the Department of Medicine 1991-1992 and joined the faculty at Case Western Reserve University in 1992. He is married and has three children. He enjoys hiking, travel, reading, and, for unclear reasons, is a fan of Arsenal Football Club.

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.
UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
