About
Mark Prendes, MD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon at University Hospitals and the director of the oculoplastic surgery service. He is a native of the greater Cleveland area and has been in practice there since 2018. He attended the University of Michigan for his undergraduate education, followed by Indiana University School of Medicine for his medical degree. His ophthalmology residency was completed at the University of Washington in Seattle. He then completed a two-year fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Louisville and Oculofacial Plastic and Orbital Surgery, LLC accredited by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASOPRS).
Patient Care
Dr. Prendes specializes in the diagnosis and management of pathology of the eyelids, orbit and tear drainage system. This includes treatment of eyelid malpositions, droopy eyelids, blocked tear ducts, eyelid cancers and thyroid eye disease. Dr. Prendes has a special interest in orbital and eyelid tumors, facial trauma and facial and eyelid reconstruction.
Teaching
Dr. Prendes is actively involved in the training of resident surgeons and medical students through clinic, surgery and lectures. He trains both ophthalmology and plastic surgery residents. He has served as lead instructor for multiple orbital anatomy courses in Louisville and Indianapolis and as a course instructor for surgical anatomy of the head and neck at Case Western University School of Medicine. Additionally, he has taught multiple aesthetics skills and suturing technique labs for resident surgeons. Dr. Prendes is a core faculty member of the Ophthalmology Residency program at Case Western Reserve University and serves on the program evaluation committee.
Research
Dr. Prendes is active in research having published numerous peer-reviewed publications, and has delivered many presentations and posters at national conferences. Additionally he authored a book chapter on eyelid reconstruction. Dr. Prendes serves as a reviewer for multiple peer-reviewed medical journals to determine the scientific merit of articles submitted.
